When Scissors Fold Hair Instead of Cutting It

Hair folding between the blades is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It may send you straight to the tension screw, but changing the adjustment before checking the situation can make the original problem harder to identify.
Stop using scissors that are pulling or behaving unpredictably on the dog. Then separate the condition of the hair, the amount presented to the blades and the behaviour of the instrument itself.
Distinguish empty movement from loaded cutting
The force you feel closing scissors includes resistance within the instrument as well as the force needed to cut the material. Research modelling scissor cutting explicitly separated blade-contact friction from material deformation and fracture. Its test materials were thin sheets, not dog coats, so it cannot supply a grooming tension setting. It does explain why heavy-feeling scissors and poor cutting are not interchangeable observations. After following the prescribed cleaning and care routine, note whether the scissors move smoothly without hair. Keep your fingers away from the cutting edges. Binding, unusual noise, damage after a drop or a loose component warrants assessment before the tool returns to work.
Check what you were asking the blades to do
Was the section prepared and dry enough for the intended finish? Was there residual product or cut hair affecting presentation? Were you trying to close on a bundle larger than you could control?
Describe those conditions before altering them. If you change the section size, moisture, angle and screw setting together, a better cut will not tell you which change mattered.
For training comparisons, use only practice material approved for your scissors and follow your tutor's method. A research paper that tested paper or plastic is not an instruction to cut those materials with your grooming scissors.
Identify where the problem occurs
Record whether the folding appears near the pivot, through the middle of the blade, at the tips or throughout the closure. Does it occur with a small manageable section, or only when you overload the cut? Does the problem remain when a tutor demonstrates with the same prepared material?
These observations narrow the service question without pretending to identify an invisible edge defect. A pair of scissors can look intact in ordinary light and still need professional attention.
Use the correct adjustment instructions
Tension mechanisms differ. Follow the instructions for the exact model or ask for support. Do not apply a remembered “drop angle”, number of clicks or screw position from an unrelated pair.
If permitted adjustment does not resolve the issue, stop. Tightening further to force a cut can leave you working against unnecessary resistance without fixing the edge or alignment problem.

Send a better service note
Include the model, any recent impact, the maintenance performed, where the folding occurs and the conditions used for your comparison. “Folds a small prepared practice section at the final part of closure; smooth empty movement” is more useful than “not sharp”.
