Curly or wool coat

Dense curls or woolly coat that keeps growing and can mat underneath the fluff.

VUNRO route: brush-to-skin, comb check, then clip or guard-comb only when clear.
Long silky drop coat

Flowing, straight or softly waved coat that parts and tangles around ears, legs and belly.

VUNRO route: detangle first, then choose tidy, hygiene or length-preserving trim tools.
Spaniel or sporting coat

Shorter body coat with longer feathering on ears, chest, belly, legs or tail.

VUNRO route: treat body, feathering, paws and hygiene areas separately.
Wire coat

Harsh, textured jacket with beard, brows or furnishings that can soften if over-clipped.

VUNRO route: choose texture-preserving tidy work or a practical pet trim.
Smooth or short coat

Short, flat coat sitting close to the body, usually with no length to clip.

VUNRO route: deshedding, bath prep, nails, paw and hygiene tidy.
Double or heavy coat

Protective outer coat over a softer undercoat that sheds in layers.

VUNRO route: deshed and tidy first; routine shave-down is not the default.
Mixed curly or wavy coat

Loose curls, waves or doodle-style coat that varies between body, legs and muzzle.

VUNRO route: brush and comb by area; choose length only after the comb glides through.
Mixed or unsure coat

Different coat zones on the same dog, or a mix where body, tail and legs behave differently.

VUNRO route: pick tools by zone and let the comb test decide the safe length.
Corded or specialty coat

Long separated cords or specialty coat structure that needs a dedicated maintenance routine.

VUNRO route: keep trimming conservative unless you deliberately maintain cords.
Hairless or very sparse coat

Very little body coat, sometimes with light furnishings on the head, feet or tail.

VUNRO route: focus on nails, hygiene and light detail work rather than body clipping.

A5 blades unclip as one square unit. Not sure is fine, the plan will explain.

This tool helps with grooming choices only. If skin looks sore, broken, infected or painful, stop grooming that area and seek veterinary advice.

Grooming tool questions

A few things worth knowing before you buy

The tool above gives you a tailored plan. These answers explain the most common blade, comb and coat questions.

Do I need a clipper, trimmer, blades or guard combs?

It depends on the dog, coat and finish. Clippers and detachable blades are usually the best choice for heavier body clipping and blade-length work. The VUNRO PRO Pet Hair Trimmer can also handle broader trimming and full grooms on suitable coats, with its adjustable blade and guard combs. The PawTrim PRO LED Trimmer is the detail tool for paws, pads, feet, face edges, hygiene areas and tight spots.

Can guard combs be used over any blade?

No. Guard combs need the right short base blade underneath. Compatible base blades commonly include #10, #15 and #30, depending on the comb set and grooming system. Avoid using guard combs over long blades, skip tooth blades, dirty coat, tangled coat or matting.

What if the coat has matting?

Guard combs will not fix matting. Tight mats need careful coat assessment before choosing a blade or tool. If skin looks sore, broken, infected or painful, stop grooming that area and seek veterinary advice.

Should double-coated breeds be clipped?

For most double-coated dogs, the first choice is brushing, deshedding, outline tidying, hygiene work and nail care rather than a full body clip. Clipping can affect coat texture and regrowth, so the adviser treats full clipping as a caution route rather than the default.

Why does the dog’s breed matter?

Breed helps identify the likely coat family and grooming route, but it is not the only factor. Coat condition, desired finish, handling tolerance and the tools already available all affect the final recommendation.

Will the adviser recommend products outside VUNRO?

No. The adviser only recommends VUNRO products. If a grooming situation is not suitable for a product recommendation, it will focus on the safest practical next step instead.
